A beautiful vintage Japanese miniature tansu-style jewelry chest in the traditional Hakone yosegi wood parquetry style. The top and sides feature an intricate geometric inlay of alternating light and dark wood blocks with a diagonal basket-weave band — the hallmark of Hakone's celebrated woodcraft tradition, practiced in the mountain region near Mt. Fuji for over 200 years. The front has three small drawers (each with a metal bail pull) and one small mirrored door, all decorated with charming hand-painted floral and bird motifs — red and yellow flowers, a cheerful yellow bird. Bottom stamped JAPAN. A beautiful collector's piece and a uniquely functional jewelry box. Approx. 5.5 inches tall x 4 inches wide x 3 inches deep. ✦ CONDITION: Used, good vintage condition. Parquetry exterior intact. Minor wear and staining inside drawers — see all photos. Mirror intact. ✦ DETAILS: Height: approx. 5.5 inches Width: approx. 4 inches Top/sides: Hakone yosegi wood parquetry Front: 3 drawers + 1 mirrored door Drawers: Metal bail pull handles Decoration: Hand-painted flowers and a bird Bottom: Stamped JAPAN Era: Approx. 1940s–1950s ✦ SHIPS: Wrapped in bubble wrap, padded box.
