Step back into the final years of the Victorian era with this beautiful antique copy of Two Little Pilgrims’ Progress by Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of beloved classics including The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. Books like this were not simply stories tucked away and forgotten. In the late Victorian home, books were part of the household itself, filling family bookcases, sitting on parlor tables, and being read and passed among generations. With its wonderfully ornate cloth binding, scrolling decoration, floral accents, and charming illustration of two children surrounding a harp, this volume still has the decorative presence that made books of this period so beautiful to display. What makes this piece especially fascinating is its connection to the Victorian era. Queen Victoria's reign lasted from 1837 to 1901, so a book published around the turn of the 20th century can quite literally belong to the closing chapter of Victorian life. For someone accustomed to thinking of “Victorian” as something much farther removed in history, holding a book from that period makes the era suddenly feel remarkably tangible. The cream-colored cloth cover has aged to a warm antique tone, with olive-green ornamentation and touches of faded red. The page edges have naturally darkened with age, and the binding and cloth show wear consistent with a book that has survived for well over a century.
