A Once-in-a-Lifetime Pilgrimage to Ise: Ise Grand Shrine (Inner and Outer Shrines) Goshuin Set Details: Ise Grand Shrine Known affectionately as Oise-san, Ise Grand Shrine is considered the spiritual home of the Japanese people and the ancestral deity of all Japanese. Among the approximately 80,000 shrines nationwide, it is the most sacred sanctuary and has been revered as a special shrine since ancient times. Formally referred to simply as Jingu, it is the collective name for 125 shrines located in and around Ise City, Mie Prefecture, centered around the Kotai Jingu (Inner Shrine) and Toyouke Jingu (Outer Shrine). * Kotai Jingu (Kōtaijingū), also known as the Inner Shrine (Naikū), enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, the ancestral deity of the Imperial Family. * Toyouke Jingu (Toyouke-daijingū), also known as the Outer Shrine (Gekū), enshrines Toyouke Omikami, who is responsible for Amaterasu Omikami's meals and is the guardian deity of food, clothing, shelter, and industry. * The Kotai Jingu was established during the reign of Emperor Suinin, the 11th Emperor, over 2,000 years ago, following a divine revelation from Amaterasu Omikami. Approximately 500 years later, during the reign of Emperor Yūryaku, the 21st Emperor, Toyouke Omikami was welcomed to Ise. * Although the Outer and Inner Shrines are located some distance apart, the traditional custom is to visit the Outer Shrine first, followed by the Inner Shrine. Furthermore, the formal order of worship is to visit the main shrine first, then the auxiliary shrines. Therefore, the correct pilgrimage route is: Outer Shrine's Main Shrine → Outer Shrine's Auxiliary Shrines → Inner Shrine's Main Shrine → Inner Shrine's Auxiliary Shrines. * New and unused.
